September 28th, 2007 - Update

Over the past 3 years, two organizations have been cooperating on a 3 year plan to translate the Jesus film into one of the Nisu dialects.  Now there is the Jesus film, God Story, the book of Luke, and chronological Biblical stories in the smallest Nisu dialect.

Unfortunately the believers in this dialect area have not been receptive to it at all, because it is a very bi-lingual area, meaning that the majority of the Nisu people speak both Nisu and Mandarin.

The believers felt it would be good to take a step backwards and to wait before starting to study the good book in Nisu as most of these Nisu can read the Mandarin books they already have.

In January of 2007, we hosted the first “Nisu Consultation,” where all of the companies focused on the Nisu came together to share information and to cooperate and see how we can help each other.  In “3 Fork Village” 7 Nisu believers have been holding firm for the past 4 years.  They are illiterate and can’t read their Mandarin Bibles. Every time some believers go there they say their biggest prayer request is that they don’t have anyone to teach them.  Each time these believers visited they would encourage them with the Word, pray together, and help them in any way they could such as help them harvest tobacco or harvest rice, chop firewood etc…)

Last year when these visiting believers were returning home. While driving down a mountain they saw a road block set up.  As they approached, they realized it was set up especially for them.  They were mildly interrogated, their vehicle and bags were searched and were taken down to the police station.  When they were released, they were told never to come back again. If they did want to go back into the mountains, they should first go to the police station and they would give them a police escort.  These are some of the realities of the political situation the Nisu and those seeking to reach them are living in.

In August, two other strong believers went to the same village and they made contact with the believers.  They rode motorbikes 3 hours in the rain on incredible muddy roads to get to the village, but they met the believers there and were able to encourage them, pray with them and sing together. These two believers want to start taking monthly trips into the village to disciple the believers.

It was a very timely trip to the village, since the Nisu corn crop was not good this year and they found the believers very discouraged.  The strongest believer was also discouraged because her husband and two middle school aged children have still not believed.
