Uncle Jon is the village demon priest. He studied and practiced for years to learn all the words and ceremonies he needed to appease the spirits and gain favor with them. Like the majority of men in the country, he has a large portion of his body covered in tattoos. Normally, this is not a problem. But for Uncle Jon, it is. His body never healed properly and he has suffered from severe rashes and skin irritations for many years. There seemed to be no cure.

One day, a Christian relative came to his village and shared with him about Jesus. Uncle Jon believed and he was baptized. Like the familiar story of Naaman, Uncle Jon was healed of his rash after coming out of the water! He joyfully shared his testimony to others in his village. "God has healed me," he cried. Uncle Jon was going to stop demon worship!

But then the problems came. Because the villagers depend on him to help with their spirit problems (which in their world view involves most problems), he can't just up and stop his duties! It would be like a policeman or fireman getting up and leaving in the middle of an emergency! He is needed to perform spirit ceremonies for the villagers. He can't stop, they argued, because they have no one else to help them. Eventually, it angered the others so much that Uncle Jon was put in jail for one month. During the time he was there, his son died. The villagers cried, "See! This is what happens when you do not worship the spirits!"

The pressured him into continuing his services, and he finally caved under the pressure. Later, when the Christian relative came back to visit, she could not find him anywhere. He was hiding out in his rice field house, because he was ashamed of what he had done. He did not want his relative to be angry with him. She taught him about God's forgiveness and love. But Uncle Jon was too afraid to return to God. It was not long before his severe rash and skin irritations returned.

• That many who are steeped in demon worship need courage to walk away from it.

• That Uncle Jon and other Tai Dam like him will return to the love and forgiveness of the Father.
