March 1st, 2008 - Bad Day

Bad day
Two young sisters were excited about going to a relative’s wedding in the capital. They would have to take a ten hour bus journey through the mountains. They planned to leave on Saturday so as to be there on Sunday when all the guests were gathering, eating and enjoying themselves before the actual wedding took place on Monday.

But their mother discovered that Saturday was the second day from new moon – definitely a bad day. So the sisters couldn’t travel on Saturday, and had to spend Sunday on a bus getting car sick on the long windy road to the capital while all their relatives were already having a good time.

For the Phuan, there are good days and bad days, depending on the phase of the moon. Old people know which days are good and which are bad. If you want to get married, hold a string-tying ceremony, open a shop, start building a house, or even make a journey, you have to make sure you’ve picked a good day. This belief is very strong and people are careful to plan their lives around it.

She went to the hospital but the doctor sent her back home, offering her no advice. Two days later, Mrs L went to hospital again. This time, the doctor told her the child had died and he would remove it surgically. It was a little girl. Mrs L and her husband are devastated.
