Ugly baby
When you visit a new born Phuan baby an appropriate gift is baby clothes or laundry detergent. The new mother needs lots of that to wash all the cloths that the baby’s bottom is wrapped in.

The parents might give you a lighter and a needle in return. This expresses the parents’ hope for their child to be intelligent, with a mind as bright as fire and as sharp as a needle.

Phuan parents love their children and want the best for them but often they will speak negatively about them to others. Maybe they say these things to confuse the spirits so the spirits will not harm their children? If the parents appear to think that the child is not worth much, maybe the spirits will leave him alone?
