Yi (Nisu) Quick Facts:
-Population over 1,000,000
-Live mostly in mountainous, hard to  reach villages in the Central and  Southern Yunnan Province of China
-Animism, Ancestor Worship and  Buddhism are the main religions

As soon as we entered the village we were taken to a home ornately decorated - yet clouded with sadness.

The mother had died about a week earlier and her body lay just behind the altar where incense was burning, people came to offer gifts, and bow in worship to her. The family was waiting for a “lucky day” to bury the body which was still two days away.

The day before the burial is called the day of “sending off” and all come to mourn together.  The Nisu believe that we have 3 souls.  One soul stays in the home, one stays in the grave and the third goes to the spirit land of the ancestors.   Our time with this family and village was incredibly moving.  We were able to share God’s love and Word with them.  It was one of the most loving and bonding times we have ever had with the people.  We thank God to have been able to “mourn with those who mourn”.
