Another related area of abuse in recent years has been through the “marriages” of Taiwanese businessmen with Vietnamese ladies. In many cases, these arrangements are for business purposes only. The Taiwanese men get access to land and property in Vietnam, and get use of a free house help when they return to their own country with their “wives” (often these men already have wives in their own country). Frequently, these women are trapped in Taiwan, only now aware of the true situation, but without the money to do anything about it.
In Malaysia, there are a large number of migrant workers who have come from Vietnam – both ethnic Vietnamese and from numerous other ethnic minority groups. Most of the 80,000 who have traveled there are a legitimate part of bilateral agreements between the governments of Vietnam and Malaysia. Yet there are also some who have been duped by the promise of good wages to pay a hefty deposit to confidence tricksters, in return for a one-way ticket to Malaysia. Once there they find themselves without work, or work permit, in legal difficulties with the authorities, and with no money to return home to Vietnam.
But, despite all this, these displaced and abused Vietnamese are not completely without hope. In Taiwan, God is already laying it on the hearts of some to minister to the thousands of Vietnamese brides there. Others are seeking to get Bibles out there to meet the need. In Malaysia, there has been a fruitful ministry among those Vietnamese legitimately working there, and thousands have come to the Lord. However, the needs of those duped into being there and facing legal difficulties have not been ignored. Local Christians are campaigning on their behalf, and seeking justice and mercy for them. May they be granted the ability to do this effectively
