Is a Lao prayer movement beginning?
“It seems like God wants us to be praying more and seeking Him. There are so many prayer events going on at the moment that I feel pulled in all directions. I don’t know which one to go to!”
This was the comment of a Lao at a prayer meeting for Lao intercessors. The meetings are still very small. However, it’s thrilling to see that while this meeting hasn’t grown large in numbers, there are signs that the vision for Lao Christians to start praying for their own nation and have a heart for the world is beginning to be realized.
In May there was an international 10 days of prayer for the world culminating on the Global Day of Prayer on 27th May. This seemed to be a very significant time for raising up Lao intercessors. There was an earthquake in northern Laos (6.1 on Richter scale) which is extremely rare in Laos. Even though a Lao woman translated the prayer booklet for the Global Day of Prayer at her own initiative, few Lao participated as she distributed it very last minute. However, that week a group of Asians initiated an all night weekly prayer meeting for students and young people at a sports centre. Other prayer groups have since started. The youth at one of the main churches in the capital have started their own all night prayer meeting. A group of students have also been walking and praying around the university campus.
Many Lao people have had very traumatic pasts – injustice, demon possession, occult involvement, physical or sexual abuse, parental divorce, adultery, prostitution etc. There is a huge need to help Christians work through these issues and know the freedom and healing that is available in Christ.
- Please pray that God will raise up a team of people within country with the gifting and desire to minister to believers at a deep level through prayer.
- Please keep praying that God will continue and increase this work of teaching people to seek His face in prayer.
