This past week a desperate situation
developed among Hmong in Thailand. By order
of the Thai government, 6,500 Hmong were
evicted from their refugee camp homes and
put behind barbed wire on a road near the
Thai-Laotian border.
The goal? To force them to return to
Laos. Because many of the Hmong fought
Laos’ governing communist power during the
Vietnam War, they fear jail or worse if they
return. At the same time four journalists
from Canada, Australia, and the United
Kingdom have recently documented that Hmong
in Laos are indeed being hunted down and
killed.
Meanwhile, in Thailand, the government has
threatened large fines or imprisonment to
anyone who helps the refugees, even
forbidding sale of food to them. A
two-year old child died because doctors were
forbidden to provide any of the Hmong with
medical care.
Pray:
- Heavenly Father—You who love justice and
mercy--we ask your mercy on those who
are suffering in Thailand and Laos.
- Give Christians in Thailand wisdom and
the ability to reach and help these
refugees. Show Your love to the Hmong
through your people.
- Change the government position so that
food, shelter, and medical care are made
available.
- Provide not only “daily bread” for the
Hmong; cause them also to turn to You,
the bread of life.
- Even as we plead for your intervention
in providing for the life needs of the
refugees, we pray that Your good news
will reach them and that they will find
eternal life through You.
