Mae Sot is a town in Thailand, on the border to Myanmar. The “Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge” is one of four official border crossings between the two countries. Tens of thousands of Burmese live in and around Mae Sot, having gone there in the hope of a better existence.
Many find themselves in one of the hundreds of farming compounds of 100-200 households each, seeking out an existence as farmhands earning about US$1.00 per day. Their children don’t have any schooling opportunities, and health care is non-existent. The two churches concerned for their spiritual needs are too far for them to reach, and most people have never heard the gospel. Most are illegal immigrants, and are therefore living in constant fear of being detected and deported by the Thai authorities.
Pray
- For better physical living conditions for these people (various NGO’s are trying to provide some basic healthcare, though they don’t readily receive permission to do their work).
- For the few Christian workers trying to minister to them in an integrated way, but often finding themselves overwhelmed by the number of people and their spiritual, emotional and physical needs.
