In August the manager of another department came to our office to say good bye. Today is her last day at our company as she hope to go overseas – a dream that many of the young people here have. After she talked for a little while, she walked over to the most senior employee in our office. The next thing I knew was she was kneeling down in front of her, bowing down several times and murmuring some Buddhist formulas. I have heard that this is the way to pay honour and to do a good deed at the same time. What thoughts were in this manager’s mind while she was kneeling there on the floor? Children honour their parents, grandparents and their teachers in this way. Respect and obedience to authorities are essential in this society. What does this mean for somebody who wants to honour his father and mother but only worship the most high?
