Many good sailors and merchant seamen come from Myanmar, and they are much sought after in Asia because they often speak good English, and are hard working, honest and reliable. Often they are away for 9-12 months at a time, which is good for the family income but can be a real strain on families, where wives shoulder the burdens of the family home and deal with crises. Often husbands are alone at sea when they hear of the death of a loved one and cannot return for the funeral.
