In October the subsidies on fuel were removed, resulting in a 9-fold increase in fuel prices. This had a knock-on effect on prices of food, transport and daily living - but there has not been any increase in people's wages. Many people who were just surviving are now in deep trouble, with nowhere to turn for food and shelter. Crime rates in poor neighbourhoods have risen dramatically.
