Nearly 4% of Myanmar's
population are Muslims. These are made up of Muslims from
the Western coastal areas - the
Rohingya - and
Muslims from an Indian background who live in many of the
larger towns and cities in Myanmar.
In the downtown area of
Yangon, mosques are said to outnumber Buddhist pagoda and
temples. Nonetheless, Muslims are often looked down upon by
Buddhists, partly for historical reasons and partly due to
stereotypes of Muslims being inflexible, argumentative and
making animal sacrifices. There are very few initiatives to
reach Myanmar's Muslim millions with the Good News.
Pray:
- For Christians and
churches in Myanmar to grasp a vision to reach out to
Muslim neighbors and friends
- For literature to help
with outreach to Muslims
- For Rohingya Muslims -
often suffering difficult conditions in their homeland
near the border with Bangladesh
