The precise number of people in Myanmar with HIV/AIDS is not known; figures range from the officially published (50,000) to the unofficial (one million).

 

What is known is that it is increasingly a leading cause of death amongst young people. Many beliefs surround the whole issue of HIV, including a belief that traditional medicine can cure the disease. Some traditional healers have made huge sums in selling such medicines to vulnerable people.

• For Christians and churches in Myanmar to grasp the seriousness of the HIV problem, and apply Biblical truth to the issues within their own communities and families
• For effective prevention and treatment programs to become more available and accessible
• For Christians to be able to present real hope to those who are suffering - instead of the false hope of medicine men
